Australian Identical Triplets

The ignorant and the prejudiced are often heard asserting, typically loudly, that Asians (particularly the Chinese), Rockettes, Grenadier Guards and flies, “all look the same”.

Although it’s undeniably true that the members of these groups are similar in appearance, each is unique and has many clearly differentiating physical features, such as swatting scars and excrement stains.

And that’s before one considers the distinguishing personality traits and idiosynchratic behaviours and intelligence levels.

Yes, identifying the actual perpetrator when confronted by an identity parade of fly crime suspects can be challenging (the number of wrongful ‘death penalty’ convictions of flies is disturbingly high).

But examine any three individual flies closely and you’ll soon discern the clear differences.

Some are slightly smaller, have a higher-pitched buzz and can’t dance in time with any music.

A few have one or more missing limbs from avoidable accidents involving encounters with men’s electric shavers, superglue droplets, small-fingered biology students and their pre-sucked hard-boiled sweets/candy (lollies, as they’re known in Australia).

And a surprisingly large number have very distinctive feet and, if they’ve just been knee-deep in someone’s tuna salad or vomit, an unmistakeably different odour.

IMPORTANT

When smelling a fly, do so gently.  A too sudden, vigorous sniff can result in the fly being inhaled and, ultimately, laying its eggs in your sinus.

If you’ve ever had a friend nicknamed ‘Maggot-head’, the chances are he or she ignored this advice.
