Australian Test Team

Training flies to harass, irritate and intimidate is something at which Australians have been excelling for generations.

It was the Federal Government which, from the early 1950s, first trained millions of flies to bother idle immigrants.

Lazy Italian bricklayers (45), indolent, complaining poms (Englishpersons) (534) loafing Latvians (3) and countless hundreds of other unproductive Europeans were targeted by the trained flies until the malingerers either started working hard or booked a plane or boat trip home.

The initiative had two other big benefits.

First, many of those who returned to their homeland became successful politicians and captains of industry and helped to lead Europe’s economic and general decline.

And second, the fly-training techniques developed were adapted to enable Australian sporting teams to produce specialist, crack squadrons of flies to antagonise members of visiting sports teams and individuals.

This Fly Artwork commemorates one of the new nation’s most famous squadrons, the 1999 Test Team which helped Australia to another memorable, and unfair, win against Pakistan.
